Credit unions in Massachusetts

Credit union: In the state, there are 160 headquartered credit unions with over 450 active branch offices. Those offices serve over 3.1 million members. Since the population of Massachusetts is about 6.8 million, that means almost half of the population of the state enjoys the benefits of credit union membership. The largest credit union in the state is DCU, which has over 856,000 members. It has been serving members since 1979. There are a variety of ways to obtain membership, but members of this cooperative are primarily employed in communications and utilities. 

Like most other states, there are cooperatives in Massachusetts that serve a variety of needs and populations. Several are based on your employment and are reserved for specific professions, like teachers or firefighters. Others limit membership to those who work for one particular employer, like the city government or a specific university. There are several that are community-based and open to anyone who lives/works/worships in that community. 

Car insurance: Car insurance is not generally expensive in the state, but rates do increase in the metro areas around Boston. On the whole, drivers in the state enjoy premiums 15% below the national average. However, just because premiums are lower, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be on the lookout for a policy that costs less. Talk to your credit union about what discounts they can offer their members. 

It does not appear that many credit unions offer their own policies to their members. Most partner with the company TruStage to offer discounted plans to their membership. However, DCU has its own insurance company. Through that company, they can offer discounted insurance products to their membership. 

Drivers in the state must have insurance, so there is no way out of this expense. They must cover bodily injury per person/per accident, property damage liability, and personal injury protection coverage.
